About...

In this tutorial I will explain the basic use of simple vocoding technique. You will be guided in a step-by-step process with image and sound (if needed) examples of each step taken.

In this tutorial we will be using:

  • Raw material software/Mackie Tracktion (Trial version will do too).
  • Maxim Digital Audio - MDA Talkbox (FREE - High resolution vocoder), any other vocoder will do the job also.
  • Maxim Digital Audio - MDA JX10 for the carrier (FREE synthesizer), any other VST instrument will do the job also.
  • and a .wav file vocoder_tutorial_DRY.wav.

STEP 1

Creating new project somewhere on your hard drive and opening/leaving three empty tracks.
In the "Projects" window - press the "new project..." button and create new project somewhere on your hard drive [pic 1-1].

Double-click on the project to enter to the new edit window and delete all track except 1, 2 and 3. (so your project will look like pic 1-2).

STEP 3

Insert MDA JX10 VSTi (will act as carrier) into track 3 by dragging "new filter.." button to the track and select the plug-in, pan it hard right and change the output to "track 2" [pic 3-1].

STEP 4

Record some MIDI notes on track 3 of MDA JX10 (the notes will be the trigger of the carrier) [Pic 4-1].

STEP 5

Finally, insert MDA Talkbox into track 2 by draging "new filter.." button to the track and select the plug-in [Pic 5-1].
With default settings, presets and steps from 1 to 5 - you should hear the vocoded vocoder_tutorial_WET.wav sound from the master.

Wet: vocoder_tutorial_WET.wav
